Condition matters more than age alone
Older equipment can still be worth repairing when the system is otherwise sound.
Newer equipment can justify replacement when a major failure combines with other developing concerns.
A useful decision considers more than the price of one repair or the age of the equipment.

For the calculator, repair cost means your expected payment after warranty, including parts, labor and tax.
Confirm that amount with your contractor and do not subtract warranty again. Compare it with an estimate for comparable replacement equipment and installation, with the included work and costs clearly identified. Also ask what dependable service the repair may restore and what concerns would remain; remaining life cannot be guaranteed.
Compare confirmed options with a qualified contractor. Neither column is a recommendation on its own.
Safety first. A possible safety concern needs professional evaluation before comparing costs.

Equipment and installation
A possible combustion, electrical, refrigerant or structural safety concern should be evaluated first.
Do not operate equipment a qualified professional has identified as unsafe. A concern does not by itself establish whether repair or replacement is appropriate. Repeated failures also deserve professional assessment when comparing reliability.
Ask your contractor to confirm whether needed parts and the correct refrigerant are available for your equipment, and at what cost.
Age alone does not establish availability or make a repair impractical. Compare a confirmed repair option with replacement rather than assuming an older system cannot be serviced.
Budget, comfort, energy use, plans to move, tolerance for risk, and interest in new technology should be part of the recommendation.
The replacement estimate is optional to enter, but the calculator gives no financial conclusion without it and the other confirmed scoring information.
Warranty is explanatory: it adds no points and does not discount your payment again. The tool provides general education, not a diagnosis, safety determination, estimate or guarantee of remaining equipment life. ENERGY STAR offers broad replacement indicators; it does not validate NW HVAC’s custom scoring method. Base a final decision on confirmed condition and a qualified contractor’s evaluation.
